Snowstorms and Air Conditioners

March 17, 2016

We haven’t completely escaped winter in Sandpoint just yet. Mother Nature has provided us with a few nice days, but she’s always prepped to remind us that she’s the boss. So when she does finally let up and it starts to warm up, read below so you won’t want to have to unexpectedly call a professional out for air conditioner service.

Heavy snowfall can bury your air conditioner in the snow, diminishing its performance when the temperatures start to warm up for the season. Not to mention it can hinder a high-efficiency system from operating as such. The situation could become an even larger problem too if you don’t plan for it with an annual air conditioner service appointment.

There are things you can do as a homeowner to help your air conditioner work properly even though snow has fallen or could fall in the upcoming days and weeks.

  1. Ensure you have a 3-foot/1-meter clearance around your air conditioner. Check the area routinely to make sure that it stays clear and that there are no snow drifts or piles of debris that might have piled up during the winter.
  2. Contrary to what you may think, putting a cover over your air conditioner could end up doing more damage than you’d expect. A covered air conditioner can be inviting for rodents looking for shelter from the weather and start to call it home, causing damage to the system as they roam about.

While the weather in Sandpoint will most likely fluctuate up and down over the last few days of colder temperatures, you can’t count out the possibility of weather that can change the performance of your air conditioner. At Age Heating & Cooling in Sandpoint, we are always available to check any areas around your home or answer any of your questions, whether they’re in regards to air conditioner service or adding a new system.
